National Award For Marriage's Flour Miller

After 18 months of study and practical skills development, Simon White from Marriage's Flour, has become one of only 24 individuals in the past decade to have been awarded the UK’s prestigious Advanced Milling Diploma. On 11 July, at a special celebration in London, Duncan Monroe, President of nabim, the trade association for the UK flour milling industry, congratulated Simon on his achievement. Our Head Flour Miller, Andrew Thain and Flour Production Manager, Philip Bunn have also previously been awarded the Diploma.

The Advanced Milling Diploma was developed in the early years of this century in response to the industry’s need for a practical and technical training programme significantly beyond the level of its existing distance learning programme and vocational qualifications.  The aims of the programme include:

  • to provide further scope for the development of millers of the highest potential;
  • to improve the industry’s skills base, meeting its changing training needs;
  • to provide a means by which millers may gain a greater technical understanding of flour functionality;
  • to apply advanced theoretical knowledge in practical skills training.

nabim represents around 50 flour mills in the UK and Ireland, producing 4 million tonnes of flour per year from wheat and other cereals grown mainly in the UK.  It has been running training courses for millers for more than 100 years, with students from all over the world.
